Jane Garcia

CEO of La Clínica de la Raza

La Clínica de la Raza stands as a beacon of hope and a symbol of empowerment for the Latinx community in the Bay Area. Their enduring dedication to inclusivity, culturally sensitive care, and advocacy is a testament to their mission of promoting health and well-being for all. Jane Garcia and her team at La Clínica continue to be an inspiration and a force for positive change in the community they serve.

Rooted in the activism of UC Berkeley students, La Clínica launched in 1977 as a free clinic in East Oakland with comprehensive care, including optometry and dental services. The population served was 98 percent Latinx. The students who founded La Clinica focused on access to healthcare and with the help of volunteers and funding from Alameda County, the operation launched and eventually expanded across the Bay Area.

Jane Garcia, a UC Berkeley alum, wanted to work in the healthcare industry to help the Latinx community. Growing up without health insurance and unable to afford medical care, she and her family only went to the doctor when they were extremely sick. For this reason she went on to study public health at UC Berkeley. Following graduation, she started at La Clinica in 1980 as an intern and has committed over forty years of service to the clinic. As the CEO, she has worked diligently to expand the clinic, to make sure that others don’t experience the same barriers to health care that she experienced.

In our interview with Garcia, she shared the origins of La Clínica and its enduring dedication to providing comprehensive healthcare services, regardless of immigration status, language, or income. La Clínica provides a wide range of services, from medical and dental care to behavioral health. This comprehensive approach mirrors the organization's mission of promoting the well-being of the Latinx community and underserved populations.
