From Dreams to Action: A Conversatorio with Mayor Rey León

  • Latinx Research Center 2547 Channing Way Berkeley, CA, 94704 United States (map)

The Center for the Critical Study of the Health of Latinx Communities invites Rey León, Mayor of Huron and Berkeley graduate for a conversation about the work the City of Huron, in the San Joaquin Valley, are doing to address systemic inequalities. The United Nations had rated the San Joaquin Valley as one of the most polluted spaces on earth, and the United States Environmental Protection Agency declared that it has “some of the nation’s worst air quality, high rates of childhood asthma, and contaminated drinking water.” Against these impossible odds, the small city of Huron, located on the western edge of the San Joaquín Valley, provides a remarkable example of what can be accomplished. 94.5% of its population of 7,084 inhabitants are, according to the 2020 Census, Hispanic. Many residents are farmworkers, and more than 40% live below the poverty line. Mayor León and the community of Huron have met systemic inequality and infrastructural barriers, including access to healthcare for many, with creative solutions to address these challenges. Join the Center for the Critical Study of the Health of Latinx Communities for a conversation with Mayor León about the work he is doing in Huron, CA.
